Two weeks to go: 170 islanders sign up for The Big Skipton Sleep Out
With two weeks to go until The Big Skipton Sleep Out in Guernsey, organisers have confirmed that 170 people have already signed up to spend one night outside to raise funds for Caritas.
The Big Skipton Sleep Out takes place on Friday 20 March at the KGV Memorial Playing Fields, from 7.00pm to 6.30am. Registrations remain open and organisers are encouraging more individuals, families, friendship groups and workplace teams to get involved.
Homelessness is a significant local issue, with the States of Guernsey reporting that 1 in 64 people in Guernsey lacking access to secure housing. By taking part, islanders will help fund Caritas Guernsey’s modular housing project, supporting the creation of safe, secure modular homes that restore dignity and independence for people experiencing homelessness.
The event was originally due to take place earlier this year but was postponed during Storm Ingrid on safety grounds. Everyone who registered was automatically transferred to the new date, and organisers are now urging anyone who was considering it to join.
Susan Fouquier, Chief Executive Officer of Skipton International, said:
“With a fortnight to go, it is really encouraging to see 170 people already committed to support. As one of the island’s largest mortgage providers, we know just how fundamental a safe, secure home is and how devastating it can be when people do not have access to one. That is why we created The Big Skipton Sleep Out – to raise awareness and vital funds for long term solutions to homelessness. If you have been considering taking part, there is still time to register, and we would love you to join us.”
Graham Merfield, Chair of Caritas Guernsey, said:
“Homelessness is often hidden, but it is present in our community as shown by recent reports from Citizens Advice Guernsey and the frequent use of our emergency sleeping pods. By choosing to sleep out for one night, participants help shine a light on the issue and help us build long-term solutions, including a supported community using modular housing that provides safe, dignified accommodation. We look forward to welcoming even more people at the Big Skipton Sleep Out in the next two weeks.”
Participants are asked to aim to raise at least £50 in sponsorship, with every pound raised supporting Caritas’ modular housing project.
Last year, more than 150 islanders took part and raised over £35,000, helping to accelerate progress towards a lasting solution.
