Mortgage
Customer Service Review:
Unfortunately my expat mortgage process with Skipton took far too long to be called a smooth process. It started in August 2016 and completed February 2017 i.e a good 6 months.I lost a huge amount of money because of not being able to convert to a buy to let mortgage and rent out my vacant property. I would certainly want it investigated as I fail to understand the length of time it took. I only got to communicate with Skipton directly once approval for my case was achieved in late December. Once this was done the conveyancing process took a month which was reasonable. Prior to this since applying in August 2016 with all the necessary documents I kept asking for updates and at every 1 to 2 month intervals the only response I kept getting was that the statements and payslips I sent before were out of date. This left me very frustrated and towards the end I lost hope that the mortgage would successfully go through. I wonder if the delay was actually down to the intermediary called Complete FS who I never involved personally but were involved by the mortgage adviser I was dealing with. I don't know why their involvement was needed at all but all the messages were relayed through them to me. I got a reasonable deal in the end but it was a very rough journey to get there.
Response from Skipton International:
Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry that your application took so long.
We have investigated the issue and can confirm that Skipton did not receive an application until significantly after the date you quote and then unfortunately it was incomplete. Our records show that the processing of your application at Skipton was in line with our normal prompt servicing time scales, once it had been received with the required supporting information.
Kind regards

Customer Service Review:
It took a very long time before I could move money into an account with Skipton.
I would also like to be able to have an internet account with them so that I can move my money electronically more easily. The courtesy I was given by the Customer Service was outstanding -
Product Review:
Nothing to add - having income in sterling and finding difficulty in knowing where I can earn interest
Response from Skipton International:
Thank you for your feedback.
I am pleased that you considered Skipton's Customer Service team courteous, they are a very conscientious team and will themselves be pleased to receive your feedback.
I am sorry that your application took so long, looking at the dates it would appear that Christmas postal delays were unhelpful.
I can confirm that Skipton International is currently developing a new banking platform that will enable Internet accounts. We are hoping to launch this at the end of the year and will be writing to customers nearer the time with details.

I thought that that your service was somewhat inefficient, especially getting my name incorrectly allocated to the new account & on the letter to me.

I am sorry that your new account details were incorrect. We have investigated the issue and it would appear a communication error. Skipton International’s Director of Operations has looked into the issue and followed up with the team accordingly to prevent a reoccurrence.

Very nice customer service staffs via telephone and email. Quick and efficient.
However as I live in Australia it took ages to send application forms by post.
It would be perfect if they would offer us internet banking.

They were very thorough, however, this enabled a smooth completion of the purchase of the property.

The mortgage supplied the flexibility that we required, so that we could adapt to our changing circumstances, and advance payments when possible.

Customer Service Review:
Assistance received from the telephone help line was very good. However, my discussions highlighted several process weaknesses with regard to the compliance procedures - including an opportunity to make use of information (once better-structured) provided Skipton UK within the IOM branch when opening a new account. These process weaknesses are frustrating (cause extra work and delays) for existing customers wishing to open additional accounts.
Product Review:
Good product, given the current financial climate.

Skipton International is a bank licensed and regulated in Guernsey. Our operations are independent to Skipton Building Society (although the society is our shareholder). Operating in a separate jurisdiction requires Skipton International to obtain independent verification of customer identity and address, etc., also we have no access to Skipton Building Society customer data anyway (as you would expect from two organisations following the Data Protection regulations of their respective jurisdictions). Therefore, Skipton International is obliged to request complete information from every new customer, regardless of whether they might hold accounts with Skipton Building Society. I hope this explains the rational for our verification requirements.

Customer Service Review:
The forms were easy enough but I suspect TIN actually means National Insurance number for uk residents - why doesn't it use this term in brackets?
Product Review:
one of the best rates around at the moment
Response from Skipton International:
Thank you for your feedback.
TIN is Tax Identification Number as outlined on the application form. Each country has differing terms to describe their local TIN, for example here in Guernsey it is the Social Security Number. Skipton International is a bank primarily supporting the mortgage and saving needs of Channel Islanders and British Expatriates resident in over 100 countries. It is unfortunately not practical to list local descriptions for the TINs of each country from which we receive customer applications.
Kind regards
Jim
